Whitehorse Council candidate Minwen Wu declares he is not a Chinese spy

A local council candidate has declared he is not a “Chinese Communist Party, James Bond/China spy” in Box Hill after some questioned his loyalty in the upcoming elections. It’s not the only backlash he has copped from voters in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

Whitehorse Council Chinese-Australian candidate Minwen Wu has had people question his loyalties to Australia.

Monday, October 5

A Whitehorse Council candidate has declared he is “not a CCP James Bond/China spy in Box Hill” after some questioned his loyalty to Australia.

Sparks Ward candidate Minwen Wu said he wrote the Facebook post on September 26 after someone questioned his loyalties in an online neighbourhood forum.

“There was a resident very concerned with me running as a candidate,” Mr Wu said.

He said he could feel the general atmosphere towards Chinese-Australian local council candidates was “definitely different” due to tensions around the coronavirus and the United States and Australia’s “deteriorating relationship” with China.

Mr Wu said while he had some positive feedback from Chinese and non-Chinese people in Box Hill, some simply did not want to talk to him.

“On the ground talking to residents some of them straight away have turned away from me,” he said.

MINWEN WU FACEBOOK POST

The Facebook post attracted more than 80 comments, with one person asking Mr Wu: “If there was a war between China and Australia which team would you be on?”

Another said Mr Wu was “no way” a spy and was one of the most “humble and respectful” people he knew.

Another commented: “What an odd post.”

Mr Wu said he understood some of the anger people felt about the coronavirus.
He said he felt “extremely bad” when Dr Li Wenliang, who later died from COVID-19, was shut down when he tried to raise concerns about the virus.
“I feel very sad and very angry myself,” he said.
Mr Wu, who moved from China to Australia in 2002, said he was loyal to his new country.
“This is my country – I have my children here, I have everything here,” he said.
“I have Australian citizenship, I had to give up my Chinese citizenship because China doesn’t allow dual citizenship.
“I love Australia, this is my country, and I feel I have a lot to contribute if elected, especially given the demographic mix in Box Hill (which has a large Chinese population.)”
Mr Wu said neighbourhood parties every Sunday afternoon, tai chi classes in parks, educating migrants on civic life, and introducing English and Chinese bilingual menus and directional signage in key locations, were among his election pledges.

(I AM NOT A CCP JAMES BOND/CHINA SPY in Box Hill/Australia),是在“损人利己”、“钓名沽誉”等。

我7月初在脸书上开通竞选主页时,马上就有几位西人上来说fuck off, go back to China之类。
